“I am afraid you have finally done it, Mr. Johnson!,” a reader wrote Brad A. Johnson in an email recently. “Your taste buds need a level of ‘fire’ that only a dragon could understand!…It’s too bad that you have burned out your taste buds because you used to give cogent, worthwhile reviews that most of us could enjoy.”

Brad A. Johnson is a dining critic, but he also has some critics of his own. He gets emails, some praising him on recent reviews and others claiming that he’s got no taste or is too political.

Coronavirus closures 

Javier’s, a popular Newport Beach Mexican restaurant that closed after an employee got COVID-19, is back open.This week, seven more OC restaurants closed due to coronavirus concerns. Anne Valdespino has more. Read more.

Prime pastor for the pandemic

Brad A. Johnson says he has always wanted to raid the kitchen at Taquiero Taco Patio in Irvine and abscond with their trompo, the vertical rotisserie that its delicious al pastor cooks on. He’s got the next best thing now that the restaurant has family-style takeout packages. Read more.

A Restaurant closes 

A Restaurant in Newport Beach has closed its doors for now, a decision sparked by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order that restaurants can’t do indoor dining for now. Anne Valdespino has more. Read more.
