BROOKLYN, NY — In a win-win for struggling restaurants and Brooklynites looking for ways to safely get out of their apartments, the popular Tastes of Brooklyn festival is set for a return in August.
The festival — which has been holding food-and-drink crawls across the borough since 2011 — will use its format of self-guided tasting tours of local restaurants to help support eateries while maintaining coronavirus social distancing guidelines.
First up will be a tour through Carroll Gardens and Gowanus on Saturday, Aug. 1.
More than 20 restaurants have already signed up for the tour, which will be held from noon to 8 p.m. across the two neighborhoods.
"We need your help to keep these small food places alive and also raise money to build more farm stands in areas of Brooklyn that really need it," wrote Seeds in the Middle, the nonprofit who runs the event.
The food-and-drink crawl will raise money for Seeds in the Middle to continue its work providing fresh food and healthier eating habits for kids in Brooklyn.
The organization has been doing its part to help local restaurants during the coronavirus stay-at-home order by creating interactive maps to show who's open for take-out and delivery.
For the food crawl, volunteers will make sure everyone wears masks and follows social distancing guidelines. The hours, 12 to 8 p.m., are an extension of previous festivals so that more people can participate and spread throughout the two neighborhoods.
"Be a culinary explorer again," they wrote. "Let's boost businesses and healthy kids together. Keep Brooklyn strong!"
