CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland would require restaurants that have children’s menus to offer healthy drink options such as milk, water and juice with their meals under legislation that targets sugary drinks.
The legislation, approved Monday by City Council’s Health and Human Services Committee, is an effort to promote better nutrition and health among children by reducing sugar intake.
“We’re trying to change culture in Cleveland,” Councilman Blaine Griffin, a primary sponsor of the legislation, said during a hearing Monday. “we’re trying to change the way children grow up in Cleveland.”
Parents could still purchase soda or other sugary drinks, but the default for restaurants on their kid’s meals would be water or sparkling water, nonfat or 1% milk or 100% fruit juices with no added sweeteners.
The legislation could be approved as soon as Wednesday, when the full council is scheduled to meet.
Mayor Frank Jackson’s signature would then be required to enact the ordinance. It would become effective six months after passage.
The legislation was drawn up with help from the Cleveland Healthy Kids’ Initiative, a collection of 40 organizations and the American Heart Association.
“There is no question that sugar drink consumption plays a role in childhood obesity,” said Dr. Janine Arruda, a specialist at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. “Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in our country.”
Consumption of sugary beverages has been linked to chronic health conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and dental decay, according to the American Heart Association in Cleveland.
“Between sports and energy drinks, fruit drinks with added sugar, and soda, the average child in America consumes 30 gallons of sugary drinks per year,” Valerie Hillow Gates, executive director of the American Heart Association in Cleveland, said in a news release.
“That is enough to fill a bathtub, and it puts our kids at risk,” Gates said. “The Health Committee’s vote today recognizes the serious health implications of sugar consumption by kids.”
