Dining out: What it's like to eat at a restaurant after months without - SFGate

lemperbon.blogspot.com

It was minutes into my first dining experience in over two months that I found myself in a push-pull moment, when my normal actions conflicted with the protocol and precautions we're meant to take now.

It's a Thursday afternoon at Gran Electrica, a hip, modern Mexican restaurant in downtown Napa and I'm attempting to take the temperature (so to speak) of what it's like to dine at a restaurant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Napa and Solano counties were both given the green light to welcome customers back into dining rooms as of May 20 and May 21, respectively - Marin County, as of Monday, can resume outdoor dining - and even with new safety measures in place, among the biggest questions most chefs and owners have been wondering is, when will diners feel comfortable eating at restaurants again?

I'm being given a tour of the restaurant and Gran Electrica co-owner Tamer Hamawi is walking me through the restaurant, showing me changes to the bar and indoor dining room: fewer seats around the bar area, tables for diners with designated spacing in between, bottles of antibacterial hand solution spread throughout the restaurant and signified with a bright pink lightning bolt.

As we're talking, I start to lean against a surface as I get comfortable with the conversation, only to find myself pulling back after a second thought. The night was to be filled with similar transgressions, a second-guessing of things I should/shouldn't touch -  Is this salt fine to use? Has this pen been sanitized since the last customer? - things that would've been OK to handle in the Before Times.
