Restaurants were one of the hardest hit industries during the pandemic. One cafe in Barneveld has made the most of the tough situation, and it doesn't cost you a penny.
Cliff and Yvonne Hooks own and operate Barneveld Community Cafe. Every item on their menu is free of charge. They have been doing this for months since the pandemic started.
"We make it simple that if you come into eat, your bill is zero," said Cliff. "If anyone else comes in, they get the exact same bill."
The Hooks turned the cafe into a non-profit so they could accept donations and give out free meals. They volunteer 100% of their time. Yvonne answers the phone and puts the orders in and Cliff bangs away in the kitchen cooking the food.
"It's amazing and humbling because I aspire to be as good as they say we are," said Cliff.
He is referring to "The Wall." Inside the cafe thank you cards from all across the country hang on the wall. People have been showing their support from other states.
The Hooks don't ask for donations, they just dish out food. But the local community has helped keep the cafe running with money and food donations.
Many of the ingredients used in the food was grown locally.
The cafe even added a community garden that sits in front of the restaurant.
"It's a community cafe. The community is for the community to be involved," said Yvonne."
Barneveld Community Cafe is open from 6a.m. to 2p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, visit their website here.
