AZ Firefighters Make Sure to Eat Enough While Battling Wildfires - Firehouse.com

Arizona crews battling the Bighorn Fire try to stick to a strict diet when they're on the frontlines, which can present awkward moments when residents give gifts of food.

"Let's just say you and I would not be very attractive if we had to eat all those calories every day," veteran firefighter Steve Creech told KOVA-TV.

Firefighters working to contain wildfires throughout the state can eat up to 6,000 calories daily, the equivalent of 11 Big Macs. In 2018, researchers from the USDA National Technology and Development Program in Montana followed those firefighters to determine how many calories they burned so that forests and brush didn't.

"We would take a photo of their food, so we knew exactly what they received," Joe Sol, an exercise physiologist, told KOVA. "And after they finished eating it, we would take it to our trailer and weigh out what was left. We would also get a sample meal, so we could know what was the standard serving that was being supplied. We also paired that with some activity monitors to guess how many calories they are burning."

Eating healthy is serious business for firefighters, too. Meals can be served at base camp or delivered to firefighters out in the field.

"But it assures they are getting the nutrients, calories, to do the jobs they need to do up there and it keeps them closer to the fire," Rich Bowman, the food unit leader for firefighters working the Bighorn Fire, told KOVA.

And as for homemade brownies or banana bread as a reward for the work crews do to contain wildfires? Arizona firefighters are not allowed to accept food from the public, according to KOVA.
