Caleb Sharpton Wants To Pour You A Drink - Beer + Food / Weekly

Over the few years I’ve known Caleb Sharpton, bar manager at PostModern Spirits, few people have made such a unique impression on me.

His hair color is extra and changes often. He does his own makeup better than most people. And he’s quick with a wisecrack. On Sundays, which is when I would see him most often, he would be behind the bar at PostModern while regaling me with stories from his Saturday night.

One of the last drinks I had before this pandemic put the kibosh on fun times out was a shot I did with Caleb. Just to knock the edge off, y’know. Helps with the Sunday chores.

We were talking about upcoming plans at the time. He was planning to be in the pride parade that was canceled earlier this month. Bummer.

“I was in a conversation about being on a float,” he said. “Now, pretty much my main goal for this year is to just maintain some semblance of normalcy. And dress up the best I can every day and put on some mascara and glitter.”

Here, at the end of pride month it’s worth mentioning again, and again and again that rights for gay, lesbian, transgender, queer people are basic human rights.

With that out of the way, Caleb is awesome at being a gay dude. He’s an awesome dude, in general. And befitting the atmosphere of the moment, and the Black Lives Matter movement, He had some things to say.

“it’s heartbreaking to know that there are people out there who hurt others based on their skin tone or sexual preference or their gender identity,” he said.

This is why we have to listen. There’s one group that really needs an ear, and help, he said.

“I do miss working behind the bar. I didn’t realize how much I would miss work.”
“To make sure their voices are heard, stand up for our black and trans sisters and brothers,” he said, speaking about multiple minorities. “Not only are they on the queer identity spectrum, they were born into a skin color that is hated on. When they put their voices out there, they put their lives on the line.”

Speaking of listening, it’s something that Caleb is used to doing. He’s eager to get back behind the bar, but he said it will be a while before he does.

“I do miss working behind the bar. I didn’t realize how much I would miss work. What I wouldn’t give to go back and feel safe, so I can put my problems on the back burner and help people,” he said. “I’m basically like a therapist. Most therapists would be like ‘don’t drink your problems away,’ but I’m like, drink them away!”

And he had one message for everyone.

“Stay safe out there, and try to keep your head up as much as you can. This world may be burning a little bit, but in the end we will pull through. Everybody keep your head up,” he said. “I don’t want to see people go through massive bouts of depression. Find a reason to smile. There’s at least one in your life.”

We’re two guys who like good beer and good food. The expertise we share – if you can call it that – comes from a combined 50 years of sipping, sampling and supping. We just want to entertain, tell some stories and share our experiences with like-minded folks who know that life is best enjoyed with tasty beer, delicious food and great friends.
