In a sign air travel is starting to return to normal, American Airlines will bring back drink service to premium class passengers on all flights starting May 1.
American, which ditched drink service more than a year ago at the behest of customers and flight attendants, has been giving travelers bottled water on flights under 2,200 miles for months, but it is starting to return scaled-back service to pre-pandemic levels.
Main cabin customers will have to wait until June 1 to get complimentary beverage service, while alcoholic beverage service and onboard food purchases should come this summer.
That means canned juices and sodas will start to be available again as Fort Worth-based American Airlines enters the heavily anticipated summer season when it expects a massive uptick in flying. The airline has been expanding schedules, bringing back jets and recalling flight attendants in anticipation of increased consumer demand entering the busy summer vacation season.
American said it made the decision in consultation with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants and experts from a partnership American developed with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“American’s reintroduction of beverage service is a careful and informed process to ensure everyone on board feels safe and comfortable,” said a statement from Brady Byrnes, American’s vice president of flight service. “When customers fly with American, they are trusting us with their safety.”
American has been offering beverage service on flights over 2,200 miles since earlier this year.
Other airlines are following suit with some of the services they offered before the COVID-19 pandemic, which shook up the way carriers care for customers. Southwest Airlines began a limited soda and beverage offering for all customers on March 15 on flights over 250 miles, essentially any flight long enough to enable pilots to get to a cruising altitude long enough for flight attendants to hand out beverages.
