BLUE ISLAND, IL — Two men wearing yellow reflective vests distracted and robbed an elderly couple in an apparent ruse burglary. The men told the couple not to drink the water because there was coronavirus in it, according to information obtained from police.
Around 6:15 p.m. July 13, the couple told police that a white man came to their home near west 143rd Street in unincorporated Blue Island. The man was dressed in a yellow reflective utility vest with a mask covering his mouth and a baseball cap.
Cook County Sheriff's Police said the man lead the wife to the enclosed back porch where her husband was sitting. He kept the couple distracted when the wife noticed another man leaving through the front door.
The man told the couple he was there to check the water and not to drink it because it was contaminated by coronavirus. She said the man remained on his cell phone the entire time he was in the house, police said.
The man left and joined the other man in a 4-door white pickup truck. Police said the wife called them when she discovered several thousand dollars worth of cash and jewelry missing from an upstairs drawer.
