A primary corridor in Birmingham’s Avondale entertainment district will be closed to traffic and open to outdoor diners, Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

That way, restaurants and bars along 41st Street between First and Third avenues South will have more room to set up tables, give patrons breathing room and allow for social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

The three-day experiment, announced today by the City of Birmingham, is a trial run for a program called “Eat in the Streets.” Participating venues will include Saw’s Soul Kitchen, Avondale Common House, Post Office Pies, Luna, 41st Street Pub, Satellite (the coffeeshop and bar at Saturn) and Travis’ Food Truck.

“Dozens of businesses closed and hundreds of people have been laid off due to the economic impact of the pandemic,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said via a press release. “As we continue to operate in a ‘new normal’ during this pandemic, we are looking for new ways to serve the public.‘'

People who visit the entertainment district must wear face coverings, except for when they are eating or drinking. That accords with an order issued June 26 by Jefferson County Health Officer Dr. Mark Wilson, which requires people throughout the county to wear face masks in most public spaces.

The order, which applies in Birmingham, says people may remove their masks while eating or drinking, as long as they replace the mask when interacting with other people.

Volunteers at “Eat in the Streets” will be on scene to remind people to comply with guidelines for face masks and social distancing, according to the City of Birmingham. Take-out orders also will be available, the press release says.

The temporary closure of 41st Street lines up with Avondale’s recent designation as one of Birmingham’s four entertainment districts. (The others are in Five Points South, Uptown and Pepper Place.) Participating businesses with liquor licenses can sell alcohol to be consumed off-premises, within the boundaries of the entertainment district and within its hours of operation.

That means you can buy a beer at a bar in Avondale, for example, and take it with you when you leave, drinking it on the street or carrying it to a nearby restaurant. Operating hours for the Avondale entertainment district are 5 p.m.-1 a.m. Thursdays, 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Fridays, 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Saturdays.
