What lies beyond the pandemic? MassForward is MassLive’s series examining the journey of Massachusetts’ businesses through and beyond the coronavirus pandemic.

As La Cucina di Hampden House in Hampden, Mass., reopens outdoor dining service on Monday, it is also introducing a new drink: Brian the Bartender Bourbon Smash.
The drink gained popularity during the coronavirus pandemic after Brian Fitzgerald, retired Springfield firefighter turned bartender, started the Facebook group “Brian the Bartender.”
The Facebook group was started to offer people recipe ideas and gather a community during the pandemic.
But what he thought would be a couple of friends, turned into a much bigger community.
“I didn’t think anything other than, it might just be one or two friends,” he said. “And by the end of that night, there was probably close to 100 people on the page.”
Now it’s grown to more than 2,300 people.
Fitzgerald joined MassLive reporter Heather Adams on Facebook Live on Friday to teach readers how to make three drinks, including the “Bourbon Smash.”
Start following along in the video below at about 28:20 to learn how to make one yourself.
But if you’d rather have to made for you, La Cucina di Hampden House is opening for outdoor dining at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 8.
And if bourbon isn’t your drink of choice, Fitzgerald also suggests getting the Espresso Martini,] or the Peanut Butter Martini.
“[I’m] just excited to get back to work actually,” Fitzgerald said on Facebook Live. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
