Of all the weighty issues airlines and travelers have faced since the coronavirus crisis crushed travel demand, the status of free drink coupons ranks near the bottom.
But Southwest Airlines heard from enough concerned passengers on social media that it decided to extend the expiration date of one of its signature frequent flier perks.
Travelers with coupons expiring this year will be able to use them through the end of the year, the airline quietly announced last week in a post on its community forum.
The headline: "Something to cheers to!"
Another reason for the extended expiration date: Southwest isn't serving alcohol right now and hasn't said when it will return as travel picks back up. Southwest suspended in-flight service in March and only recently resumed it, but is only offering canned water and snack mix to start.
Southwest typically doles out free drink coupons to frequent fliers for every 10 one-way flights, but has suspended the program during the pandemic. The coupons are a coveted perk and a hot commodity on flights and on eBay. Passengers regularly beg for some on social media when they have a problem with their flight, and usually get a polite no.
Southwest added an expiration date to the drink tickets in 2010. Eligible travelers receive four coupons per batch and they expire one year from the date of issue. Travelers often try to pass off expired coupons in hopes flight attendants won't notice or care. Southwest charges $6-$7 for beer, wine and spirits on flights.
Passengers who buy the airline's priciest ticket, called Business Select tickets, receive a voucher for a free drink that must be used the day of the flight.
On Twitter Monday, one traveler lamented finding drink coupons he lost in 2016.
