KALAMAZOO, MI — Police are investigating after a woman in a viral video alleged that more than a dozen people were drugged at a bar near Western Michigan University’s campus.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley Jr. responded with a video statement on Thursday, April 15, saying several detectives have been assigned to investigate the allegations of “drink tampering” at Y Bar in Kalamazoo.

The department is looking into multiple tips received in the past 24 hours, Coakley said.

In the video, the woman speaking identifies the person she believes is responsible. The Gazette is not naming the person at this time, as police have not issued any criminal charges.

The woman in the video said she posted the video as a warning to others. She said in the video she went with a group of women to the bar, and when they woke up the next day, none of them had any recollection of the night before. She said they later tested positive for opiates.

Only one person was serving drinks to the group throughout the night, she said.

The Kalamazoo Gazette is not posting the video here, out of privacy concerns for those involved.

Police did not immediately respond to additional questions about the investigation, and whether they have previously investigated any similar complaints connected to the business.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Information Officer Ryan Bridges said it is an ongoing investigation, and police were fielding calls from multiple media sources Thursday. He said the department did not have additional information to release.

WMU spokesperson Paula Davis said the location of Y Bar, at the intersection of Howard and West Michigan Avenue near the west entrance to WMU’s campus, falls under the city of Kalamazoo’s police jurisdiction. She shared a message about the incident with WMU’s public safety leadership.

Kalamazoo City Commissioner Eric Cunningham posted on Facebook Thursday morning that elected officials have been notified of the allegations, and police were investigating.
