WINTER HAVEN, FL — A woman with passion for Winter Haven restaurants is bringing drink and food knowledge to locals with her newly launched business, Winter Haven Food Tours.

Amada Anderson, 39, originally from West Palm Beach, was working at Winter Haven City Hall when the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020. Like so many people in Polk County who lost their jobs due to massive layoffs, Anderson was no exception. After she got on unemployment, she started dreaming about brighter days. As she thought about downtown Winter Haven restaurants, the idea hit her.

"'I can launch a food tour,' I thought to myself," Anderson told Patch. "This is a really good opportunity for me to train people here to be tour guides. And the food here is fabulous—it's so good."

Anderson, who moved to New York in 2008 to live her Broadway performance goals, worked as a tour guide for a ghost tour company in New York City. Later, she took her passion for acting, singing and dance and created Broadway Tours.

"My ideas was to sing on the tours, and bring the performance to life," she said. "We have a downtown 'Alexander Hamilton tour,' and a 'Rent' tour." The Broadway tour company is still in business.

She and her husband moved back to Florida in 2019 to help take care of her mother. Anderson said it makes her excited to give locals the chance to discover new restaurants. Her aunt, a Winter Haven resident, had no idea there is a Mexican restaurant or brewery downtown.

Her company offers the following tours: Ciro's Sweet Tooth Dessert Tour, Afternoon Flavors Winter Haven Stroll, Winter Haven Brunch Tour, Happy Hour Winter Haven Tour and private tours.

On each tour, guests sample highlighted items from each restaurant's menu. Anderson also includes information about the history of the buildings seen along the tour. "You get to learn a little about the Italian food, the Mexican, Thai," she said.

Stops on the tours include eight to ten places, and last for about two-and-a-half hours. Many of the stops are outside for coronavirus safety precautions, and only 10 people maximum are allowed on a group tour.
