With restaurants still feeling the pinch of the COVID-19 recession, fast-food giant Burger King made an unexpected announcement on its Twitter account, asking its customers to patronize some of its rivals, including McDonald’s.

The company’s branch in the United Kingdom reportedly issued the tweet to help support fellow fast food chains as the pandemic lingers.
While the U.K. is faring better than the U.S., its case count has jumped along with other European countries in the past several weeks, clearing one million confirmed cases and forcing an additional round of shutdowns across public sectors.
CNN Business reports that Burger King’s U.K. offices want customers to keep enjoying Burger King’s menu items, but to include other fast food enterprises as well.
"We never thought we'd be asking you to do this, but restaurants employing thousands of staff really need your support at the moment," the tweet said, referring to Subway, KFC, Papa John’s Pizza Hut, and others. It also mentioned independent restaurants.
“So, if you want to help, keep treating yourself to tasty meals through home delivery, takeaway or drive thru.”
The show of solidarity from Burger King mirrors the broader U.K. campaign to promote eating to-go meal options from restaurants, called the Eat Out to Help Out campaign, which offered various discounts on select dates to encourage customers to patronize struggling establishments.
The guidance was withdrawn on Sept. 1 amid rising case numbers.
