CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- It might not be the holiday celebration you hoped for, but you can celebrate the Chanukah themes of light, hope and religious freedom Dec. 10-17 through a series of online interactive events dubbed “Eat, Pray, Latkes,” hosted by Temple Emanu El (TEE).

The public is invited to watch the 5:30 p.m. nightly lighting Dec. 10-17 of the giant outdoor menorah at the Pinecrest shopping center in Orange Village via Facebook Live.

You can also tune in to the candle-lighting and Shabbat Torah service at 5:15 p.m. for the pre-reception and at 6:15 p.m. for the service on Friday, Dec. 11, via Zoom. Contact Renee Higher at rhiger@teeclev.org for a Zoom ID and password.

TEE is collecting new and like-new winter coats in all sizes for the holiday season, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays now through Dec. 23. A donation bin is located in the front vestibule of the building, 4545 Brainard Road.

Members of the congregation will enjoy a pre-ordered holiday dinner, an online comedy show for children and share photos of their families celebrating the holiday.

According to Higher, TEE’s executive director, they scheduled an online event each of the eight days of Chanukah to help people celebrate safely together during the pandemic.

She explained that the eight-day festival is also known as the Festival of Lights. The holiday celebrates the 168 BCE victory of the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish fighters, who were rebelling against a Greek culture. It also marks a rededication of the holy temple in Jerusalem.

The practice of lighting an eight-branch menorah recalls the miracle of a small jar of oil lasting eight days in the temple. More information can be found at reformjudaism.org/jewish-holidays/hanukkah/history-hanukkah-story

Mini tree auction goes online: The annual mini Christmas tree and wreath auction traditionally held in person at the Chagrin Falls Township Hall is an online event, now through Dec. 13.

Each item was decorated by local businesses and nonprofit groups, with the proceeds of the auction benefitting Chagrin Valley programs. The items are also on display in store windows throughout the village.

Hazardous materials drop-off canceled: The Dec. 5 Chagrin Falls household hazardous waste drop-off event has been canceled for safety precautions due to the pandemic.

Zoom in with Santa Claus: With its annual children’s program canceled this year due to the pandemic, Santa Claus is offering virtual meetings with children on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13, live from the North Pole.

For a $5 donation to Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, parents can reserve a five-minute Zoom meeting with Santa. Contact cvlt.org.

Watch ‘Annie’ online: The sun will surely come out Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13, and again Dec. 19 and 20 as Chagrin Valley Little Theatre presents an encore performance of its 2019 staging of “Annie.”

Police portal offered: Chagrin Falls residents have a new online tool to interact with the police department. Using any cell phone, tablet or computer with internet access, residents can now request vacation watches, overnight parking permissions and register pets and bikes, making it easier to return lost ones.

Solon passport drawing: The Solon Chamber of Commerce will hold its virtual drawing at noon Saturday, Dec. 12, for 17 prizes for participants in its Passport to Solon program.

Players stopped at participating businesses, got their passports stamped and submitted their passports to the chamber office to be eligible. For information, contact solon.org.

Not a Mickey Mouse program: You can learn business strategy and leadership tips from Disney CEO Bob Iger from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, without leaving your home. The Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce is offering the program on Zoom. The cost is $25. Contact cvcc.org.
