For the past five years, critic Brad A. Johnson has ranked Orange County’s dining scene with a comprehensive listing: 75 Best Places to Eat in Orange County. It’s a project that readers love.

However, 2020 has been far from normal: the restaurant industry has been turned upside down and the pandemic has changed the way we eat. A traditional list didn’t make sense anymore.

This year, Brad has taken a different approach in OC’s Best Places to Eat 2020. It’s a series of different lists, each exploring a different category.

Throughout the coming days, Brad will share the best places for Italian, Chinese, pizza and Thai — and those are just a few of the lists. This week he’s started off with a bang, telling you about the five hottest new restaurants and where to pick up takeout worth the splurge. Read more

P.S.: Stay tuned for a special edition of Eat Index with lots more lists on Sunday.

Johnson shares his list of his favorite new restaurants, which he says “not only raced headfirst into a pandemic but somehow, miraculously, became some of the hottest new restaurants we’ve seen in years.” Read more.
