Let's face it, most of us aren't wild about unprocessed foods rich with whole grains, fruits and vegetables. In one study, 52% of Americans said that it was easier to do their taxes than to eat a healthier diet. If you are one of those 52%, there's hope. There are lots of simple changes you can make that will make your diet healthier without having to resort to drastic change.

Focus on fat

Many of your favorite diet snacks have friendly looking labeling that advertises itself as fat-free. It used to be thought that fat in your diet is what caused you to become fat. This of course, isn't true. While fat is a significant source of calories and can cause weight gain, it's also an extremely important macro-nutrient.

The trick is to source good fats, such as those from olive oil or fatty fish. Don't be afraid to get these essentials into your diet, and you may find yourself more satisfied and less hungry for sugar laden snacks.

Eat the yolk

If you like eggs, you've probably tried to cutout calories by using only egg whites. It turns out though, that egg yolk may actually be the most nutritious part of the egg. Egg yolks are a rich source of Choline, which many people are deficient in.

Hungry? Drink water first.

Before you grab a snack, try drinking a glass of water first. Your body can find it hard to tell the difference between hunger and thirst, and sometimes those hunger pains aren't hunger at all. If you're still hungry after drinking a glass of water, you'll be more hydrated while you're enjoying that snack.

Not hungry anymore? You just saved yourself calories you didn't need to ingest. Our understanding of nutrition and our bodies changes every passing day. These are a few of the newer thoughts on healthy eating, but there's many more. Staying in touch with nutrition is a great step toward healthier eating, so keep reading and looking for those small changes you can make.
