Critic Brad A. Johnson says that if there’s one silver lining to come out of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s that restaurants can offer cocktails to-go.

From margaritas in all sorts of flavors, to negronis and frozen gin and tonics, here’s a look at some of the best restaurant cocktails Johnson has sampled recently. Read more.

Sashimi for speed demons

Hana re topped Brad A. Johnson’s list of the 75 Best Places to Eat in Orange County last year. Now, the Costa Mesa restaurant has been doing takeout with a small number of bento boxes, sushi and sashimi trays.

Brad says he’s content to pack his fish on ice in the trunk and drive like a bat out of hell to enjoy it at home. Read more.

More ghost (kitchen) sightings

Trend watchers have been predicting that ghost kitchens — delivery-only restaurants without dining rooms — would become a thing for a few years. When COVID-19 shut down dining rooms, it gave the concept a boost. Fielding Buck explains. Read more.

Miguel’s Jr., the family-owned Corona fast food chain, is on the move. It has new corporate offices, will open its third Orange County location on May 10 and is launching what it calls an Eat Better “initiative” at the same time. Coming this summer, a customer rewards program.

Dining rooms and deals 

Miguel’s Jr. has started to reopen its dining rooms in Southern California and those locations will have a burrito combo option as well as limited-time summer drink menu. Read more.

No one is really sure why Texas fudge cake is named after the Lone Star State, but the cake does pack big, Texas-level flavor. It can be topped with nuts, crushed toffee bars or espresso bean candies. Cathy Thomas gives you a recipe for this scrumptious-looking cake. Read more.
