People are only just realizing how camels drink water—and it is blowing their minds.
A clip posted to TikTok has revealed that the mammals suck up water through their mouth. The video, shared by Clevergirl757 last month, is captioned: "Who knew camels drank water like this? I thought camels lapped up water like dogs."
The footage shows a pair of the desert dwellers heading to a trough, where they dunk their heads, ensuring their lips are just below the water line and opening their jaws so they can take on large quantities of liquid quickly.
The four-legged animals are known for their ability to go for long periods without drinking water, making them well suited to dry environments.
Camels have either one or two humps, depending on the species, but contrary to popular belief they don't keep water in them.
Encyclopedia Britannica explains that camels, known as "ships of the desert" for their usefulness as pack animals for travelers, actually store in their humps "fatty tissue, not water, which is used as a source of nourishment when food is scarce."
Britannica adds: "Although the humps do not store water, camels are still incredibly efficient in the amount of water they use per day, which is why they are able to go nearly a week without drinking.
"This is partly due to the unique shape of their blood cells, which are oval. Oval-shaped blood cells allow camels to consume large amounts of water (up to 30 gallons in one sitting) since the cells are more elastic and can change shape more easily."
It later emerged that the video of the two camels drinking from a trough was originally shared by a TikTok user called @KK__55 last year. It amassed more than 13 million views last summer, and was shared across a number of social media sites including YouTube.
Commenting on the clip, Hakaz pointed out: "That evolution though that made their noses higher for them to drink big gulps while breathing is amazing."
Jamie Scheeler raved: "Aw that's super cool. I assumed they lapped it up like a dog!"
Miranda Lauren revealed: "Horses drink the same way."
DjamilaDris reckoned: "They need to drink a lot of water … if they drank it like dogs they would spend the whole week drinking."
"Wait till you guys find out how fast they can drain a bucket, there's a reason they placed that big container," Rockless_A joked.
Living with challenges admitted: "I wish this was how my dog drinks water. Instead he spills it on the floor and lays in it like he just finished a marathon no matter how much water I give him."
Melinda simply added: "I didn't know that."
