BERRIEN COUNTY, MI — Four years after the owners of Round Barn Winery Distillery & Brewery purchased nearby Tabor Hill Winery, the two wineries are even more connected.

The vines of the two have been intertwined since Round Barn was opened in 1992, as Heart of the Vineyard by Rick Moersch — who began his winemaking career at Tabor Hill in 1979. Now, a vine-like 3.6-mile trail system physically links the wineries for visitors.

Patrons are encouraged to to purchase wine or beer at one establishment and hike along the Mt. Tabor Trail to the other establishment, drink in hand, said Jenn Wozniak, spokesperson for Moersch Hospitality Group.

If 3.6 miles may seem like a long jaunt for those afraid of finishing their beverage too soon or those who want a more leisurely stroll, Wozniak said the shortest connector between the two businesses is just about one mile in length.

Dogs are welcome to accompany humans on the trails, she said. Just leave the heels at home, Wozniak advises.

The trail system has been a vision of Moersch’s son and current owner Matt Moersch from day one, she said, but between the busy season in summer and harvest in the fall, the younger Moersch had not been able to find time to create the trails. That is, until COVID hit and everything was shut down.

“There wasn’t a whole lot to do so he went ahead and started making the trails he always envisioned,” Wozniak said. “Some of them were always there, but they were just never cleaned up and needed some work.”

Making quick work on the trail system, by the time June rolled around and restaurants were able to open with limited capacity and outdoor seating, Moersch was done laying out an enticing way to get the visitors to his wineries out into nature, exploring the woods, vineyard and his other establishment as well.

There is no fee to walk the trails. They are open seven days a week during business hours, from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Wozniak said. Hours are seasonal and, in the wintertime, patrons are welcome to snowshoe, hike or cross country ski between Tabor Hill and Red Barn.

The trails have garnered some national attention from Fox Business and Travel + Leisure Magazine this March. While Wozniak said she has seen a rise in traffic, the chances of running into a big group on the trail is slim. There is enough nature for everyone, she said.
