With anything flavored with pumpkin popular in autumn, a local dairy is now offering pumpkin pie flavored milk.
Whitehall-based Schneider’s Dairy is selling the flavored milk for a limited time as similar milk products gain in popularity.
Sales of flavored whole milk jumped 36% from 2015 to the end of 2019 nationally, said Emily Barge, spokeswoman for the Center for Dairy Excellence in Harrisburg, citing sales figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Flavored milks are big sellers at Schneider’s and Penn Hills-based Turner Dairy Farms, managers at both dairies said.
“Every year we grow with pumpkin pie LTO (limited time only), one of the few products we continue to bring back every year,” said Justin Schneider, director of sales and marketing, at Schneider’s.
Schneider’s collaboration with Sarris candies created the Sarris chocolate milkshake that has gone on to become a permanent product, Schneider said.
For Schneider’s, limited time products represent 10% to 15% of annual growth.
Flavored milks makes up 12% to 15 % of Turner’s milk sales, said Chuck Turner, president of Turner’s Dairy. “When we look at growth in sales in the last five years, flavored milk has grown faster than other categories,” Turner said.
The company markets to parents to pick it up for their kids.
“It’s extremely healthy,” he said. “The big thing is recovery from sports to rebuild muscles. And it’s at a good price point,” he said.
Turner likes a seasonal flavored milk to stay limited, so it remains special.
“The thing is we don’t keep it out long enough that it gets stale (the variety, not the actual milk),” he said.
They recently retired the chocolate banana flavored milk and have moved onto cookies and cream.
For the holiday season, Turner is revving up for a new “decadent flavored eggnog,” which is still under wraps.
“Flavored milk is nutritious, affordable, convenient and most of all, tasty,” said Liz Jalkiewicz, a nutrition specialist with the American Dairy Association North East.
Flavored milk has the same nine essential nutrients including protein, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, niacin, riboflavin, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid and phosphorus, she said.
A UPMC dietitian with no ties to the dairy industry is not impressed with flavored milk because of the added sugar.
Jessica Wrisley, a registered dietitian with UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, said flavored milk is another component of a sugary diet for many children.
“A lot of times we would frown upon people drinking flavored milk for our younger generation where added sugars is already a problem with terms of them drinking sodas, energy drinks, juices and everyday foods,” Wrisley said.
She agrees that chocolate milk is great for athletes and adults recovering after a working out.
“The added sugars are the perfect combination of carbs to protein for muscle recovery after working out,” she said.
Wrisley advocates drinking something nutritious regularly like regular milk and to look at flavored milk as a treat.
