Ashtel Studios is voluntarily recalling some licensed hand sanitizers because the packages resemble “food and drink pouches labeled with various children’s characters.”
The labels on the packages feature Paw Patrol, Barbie, Minions, JoJo Siwa, Trolls and Hot Wheels.
According to an announcement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the products recalled are all .84-ounce containers:
- Paw Patrol Hand Sanitizer, NDC No. 70108-042-01
- JoJo Siwa Hand Sanitizer, NDC 70108-044-01
- Hot Wheels Hand Sanitizer, NDC No. 70108-045-01
- Barbie Hand Sanitizer, NDC No. 70108-046-01
- Trolls Hand Sanitizer, NDC No. 70108-047-01
- Minions Hand Sanitizer, NDC No. 70108-043-01
If ingested, hand sanitizer could cause alcohol toxicity, the FDA said.
"Symptoms of alcohol toxicity may range from lack of coordination, slowed or slurred speech, drowsiness to coma, which can be fatal.
Furthermore, ingesting alcohol can affect the brain and cause impaired driving or operating heavy machinery. Alcohol can also interact with numerous drugs which may result in serious adverse effects. Ingesting alcohol by people with alcohol addiction may interfere with maintaining abstinence. Additionally, people with alcohol addiction may seek large amounts of ethanol-based hand sanitizers as a substitute."
The FDA has maintained a list of hand sanitizers that consumers should not use for reasons including they contain methanol or 1-propanol, contain 1-propanol, contain less than effective amounts of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol or have labels that are false or misleading.
In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has issued warnings about ingesting hand sanitizer, either by people seeking the alcohol content or by children who thought they were colorful drinks.
Since the onset of the COVD-19 pandemic, the market has been flooded with hand sanitizers.
The CDC has recommended that during the pandemic people wash their hands regularly with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds to prevent spreading the virus. In the absence of soap and water, you can use hand sanitizer but it should be alcohol-based with at least 60 percent ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol).
