Having your first drink can be quite a milestone moment—an experience you remember all your life. But before you enter the world of adulthood with a tipple, here are some pointers to help make your first bar experience a winner.

Choose Wisely

Don’t feel pressured into having a drink just because everyone else is doing so. Start with options with a low ABV or Alcohol-By-Volume, which signifies the percentage of ethanol (alcohol) is in a given volume of drink. “Cocktails may be a good way to start. Tall, fizzy and slightly sweet cocktails where the alcohol is masked by all sorts of syrups… juices are generally liked by beginners. The addition of juices and shaken drinks also dilute the ABV further. But be warned that sweeter cocktails reduce the perception of alcohol and you tend to drink it faster. Sure enough, alcohol shows its nasty side soon,” warns Ajit Balgi, wine & spirit consultant.

Eat, and then Drink

Before you down your first drink, take a second to think about the contents of your stomach. If there’s nothing there, you are already in trouble. “Alcohol enters your bloodstream through your stomach and small intestine. If your stomach is empty when you start drinking, the alcohol will enter your bloodstream more quickly. Food slows the flow, giving the booze more time to break down. So make sure you don’t drink on an empty stomach,” says Balgi. If possible go for a meal rich in protein as protein takes a while to digest, slowing down your alcohol levels. Nuts are great too.

Nurse it, and Take it Slow

Don’t feel pressured to pound drinks just because people around you are doing so. Don’t drink more than you feel comfortable with. Nursing your drink slowly and being seen with it through the evening is the trick to not getting intoxicated. Go for low alcohol drinks.

Don’t Drink too Fast

Spacing out your drinks can stop you from getting drunk. It also helps you enjoy your drink and get more bang for your buck. “Apply the 2D (Diet + Dilution) rule when drinking. Always dilute the alcohol with water or juice etc. It takes an hour to process a single unit of alcohol in our body. So take your time to finish your one unit. Drinking water as well as eating enough before and during a drinking session helps immensely,” says Arjun Chaudhary, Mixologist and Founder Wolf of Bar Street, a bar consulting company.

Learn to say No

Peer pressure can be hard to resist and before you know it, a few drinks could turn into one too many. But regardless of what your mates are doing, you don’t have to go all out on the drinks. “Alcohol is a recreational product and moderation is key. 60 ml spirit, 200 ml wine and 500 ml beer is a broad limit you need to keep in mind for healthy drinking. For a rough night it could be twice the said measures. Anything more and you lay the carpet for the hangover to come in,” says Balgi. So stop before the room starts spinning.

Stay Hydrated

No matter what you are drinking make sure to have a glass of water between every few drinks. Alcohol dehydrates, so drink more water to compensate even if not thirsty.

Avoid Shots Completely

For first timers, shots can be quite a bit to take in. They are much stronger than a glass of wine or beer. Avoid them completely.

Eat Before you Sleep

Heavy, fatty foods can slow down the absorption of alcohol. “Don’t go to bed just after a party. Sit and relax for sometime, keep drinking water and most importantly go for a chilled glass of milk with a small piece of jaggery. Next morning, have some more water and a chilled glass of buttermilk,” suggests Chaudhary.
