Why are humans told not to drink from bodies of water such as lakes, but wild animals seem to drink from them without suffering harm?
—Al Sargeant, Prescott, Arizona
First, by drinking the water repeatedly, many animals develop immunity to the bacteria they encounter, unless the water is deadly, which is rarely the case. Consider travelers’ diarrhea as a human example. Visitors to many other countries may get a gastrointestinal upset from water that is just fine to the people who live there. Second, harmful bacteria are often only mildly problematic to wild animals, which benefit from the water far more than they are bothered by a simple infection that is soon cleared.
