A 20-year-old Massachusetts woman was charged with assault after a road rage incident in which she threw her iced coffee and injured a toddler, according to a statement from police.

At about 12:51 p.m. Wednesday, Barnstable police received a call from a woman reporting that a driver later identified as Emma Silva, of Marston Mills, was tailgating and yelling at her, according to the statement.

The caller further reported that Silva threw a cup of iced coffee into her vehicle, striking her 2-year-old son in the face, police wrote. The toddler was sitting in his safety seat in the back of the vehicle.

The incident occurred on Route 28, and Silva’s car headed east on West Main Street, according to the report. Patrol units searched the area but were unable to locate Silva’s vehicle.

Hyannis Fire Department rescue personnel treated the 2-year-old for a facial cut and a bloody nose caused by being hit with the iced coffee.

A short time later, a Barnstable police officer contacted Silva, who came to the station voluntarily. The woman who reported the incident identified Silva as the woman in the road rage incident.

Silva was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child under 14 years of age and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the statement said.

Silva was arraigned Thursday in Barnstable District Court and released on $540 bail. She is due back in court Nov. 4.
