The Finnish Long Drink is a refreshing, bubbly taste of Finland in a can and better than most hard seltzers - San Antonio Express-News

As the cocktail-in-a-can market continues to explode, it was only a matter of time before international flair wound up on shelves in Texas. The Finnish Long Drink, a relative newcomer to the game, has translated a favored beverage from Finland into an easy, bubbly pop-top sipper that’s worth a try.

The long drink, or “lonkero” in Finnish, has an interesting history. It was first introduced to quench the thirst of a massive influx of visitors to Finland during the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki. Most often, long drinks are a concoction of grapefruit soda and gin, and they’re common enough to be frequently found on draft in Finnish watering holes.

The Finnish Long Drink’s version — the company was founded in New York City in 2018 — comes in a few flavors and strengths. Their classic gin and grapefruit flavor ranges from a 99-calorie, sugar-free sipper clocking in at 5 percent alcohol by volume to their flagship beverage at 5.5 percent alcohol and a more heady “strong” variety at 8.5 percent alcohol.

They also have a 5.5 percent ABC cranberry flavor that I recently picked up, and it’s become a hit in my house. It has a nice balance of sweetness and fruity tang without crossing over to cloying, and it has a subtle nose of juniper for a sip that’s far more complex than most of the flavored seltzers currently available.

As a person who’s generally not a beer fan, I’ll keep these around as a convenient go-to adult beverage when the situation calls for something other than a potent mixed drink.

Look for The Finnish Long Drink at Specs, Total Wine & More and several independent liquor stores across San Antonio at about $15 for a six pack. More at thelongdrink.com.
