ANN ARBOR, MI — While The Lunch Room Diner and Canteen was temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it has decided to permanently close that location and hand off the space to Eat, a scratch kitchen catering and carry-out operation.

For The Lunch Room, though, the closure is a step toward sustainability as they can focus on their other restaurants: Detroit Street Filling Station and The Lunch Room Bakery and Cafe.

Owned by Blake Reetz and Emilia Mauck, Eat plans to open the Kerrytown space for carry-out in early October, they said in an email. The menu will look similar to their current offerings at their restaurant on Packard Road, with the addition of breakfast and brunch on the weekends, and Mauck said they hope to eventually do breakfast every day.

“This expansion is very exciting for us,” Reetz said. “As more and more of our catering clients were forced to cancel their events, we knew it was time to expand on our carry-out operation. The Kerrytown location will give us the opportunity to reach a wider audience and eventually transition into a full service restaurant.”

When The Lunch Room’s Kerrytown location closed in mid-March, operations were moved across the street to Detroit Street Filling Station. The business has continued to offer curbside pickup, delivery and outdoor dining, and the menu at Detroit Street Filling Station includes many Lunch Room favorites, the email said.

The two restaurants have a relationship that extends back to 2011, when they both operated a food cart at Mark’s Carts, a former food cart courtyard in downtown Ann Arbor.

Phillis Engelbert, owner of The Lunch Room, said they opened Detroit Street Filling Station in 2017 when the demand for their food became more they could accommodate at just one location. With the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, Engelbert said it would be unwise to try to operate both restaurants.

“We wish to thank our Lunch Room patrons and assure them that the spirit of The Lunch Room lives on at Detroit Street and at The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe,” Engelbert said. “We appreciate all their love and support over the years.”
