Eat in the Streets, the outdoor dining program developed to allow patrons to enjoy food and drinks outdoors while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, will return to Avondale this weekend.
The program, which kicked off last month with a trial run, was developed to help boost traffic to the city’s restaurants amid the current public health crisis. From July 10 to 11, the city of Birmingham blocked off a primary corridor in Avondale’s new entertainment district to give restaurants and bars along 41st Street between First and Third avenues South more room to set up tables for patrons to enjoy their meals outside.
This weekend’s iteration of Eat in the Streets will be in Avondale on Friday, Aug. 14 from 5 to 11 p.m and Saturday, Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The corridor on 41st Street South between First and Third avenues South will be blocked once again, and the event will continue rain or shine.
Eight businesses are expected to participate in this weekend’s Eat in the Streets:
- Avondale Common House
- Saw's Soul Kitchen
- Post Office Pies
- Avondale Brewing Co.
- 41st Street Pub
- Spring Street Bar and Grill
- Travis' Chicago Style Food Truck
- Luna Latin Cuisine/Cantina on Wheels
Bands will perform on the Avondale Brewing Co. stage starting at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Earthbound will perform on Friday, and Manic Vision will perform on Saturday. Both performances will be free. A DJ will also appear on the stage at Avondale Common House on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Jefferson County’s mask ordinance is still in effect, and people who visit the entertainment district must wear face coverings, except for when they are eating or drinking. People may eat at the outdoor tables or order carryout. The Avondale entertainment district allows patrons to take their drinks to-go. However, restaurants, bars, and clubs in Birmingham--including those in the Avondale entertainment district--must stop serving alcohol at 11:00 p.m. due to a July 27 order from the Alabama ABC board to limit the sale of alcohol in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
“That first weekend for Eat in the Streets was a really big win for Avondale, and we are looking forward to doing it again this weekend,” said Taylor Lander, the director of events and marketing at Avondale Brewing Co. and president of the Forest Park South Avondale Merchants Association, in a press release. “The merchants are excited and appreciate the support from the city and patrons.”
Due to the program’s success, the city has planned more dates for Eat in the Streets in the coming weeks.
