Starbucks has a habit of releasing new drinks around holidays, and apparently Memorial Day during a pandemic is no exception. Along with bringing back the beloved S’mores Frappuccino, the coffee giant just launched a new Iced Guava Passionfruit Drink.

According to a publicist for Starbucks, the new drink was inspired by the success of the company’s iced coconut milk drinks that debuted in March. The Iced Guava Passionfruit Drink, which is a pretty blush color, is already showing up on Instagram—and people seem to love it. One fan even called it “Hawaii in a cup.”

But while this drink may feel a bit lighter than your typical frapp, we just had to ask: How does it stack up nutrition-wise? Here’s what dietitians think.

What’s the Iced Guava Passionfruit Drink made of?

There are all kinds of summery flavors in here. The drink features guava juice blended with “notes of passionfruit,” and pineapple and ginger flavors, according to Starbucks’ official description. It’s all shaken with coconut milk and served over ice for a smooth, creamy drink.

Just a heads up: The guava juice is actually a juice blend of white grape juice, “natural flavors,” and guava juice concentrate. The pineapple and ginger flavors come courtesy of a syrup.

Is the Iced Guava Passionfruit Drink healthy?

FWIW: At no point did Starbucks say that their new drink is healthy—and no shocker here, it’s not. But Keri Gans, R.D.N., author of The Small Change Diet, is concerned that the drink’s name might mislead people into thinking it’s healthy. “This drink has a trendy name that might infer it comes with health benefits, but unfortunately what it mostly provides is a lot of extra calories and added sugars,” she says.

While Scott Keatley, R.D., of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, calls this a “fun drink,” he points out that “there is a ton of sugar hanging out under the lid,” thanks to the four pumps of pineapple ginger syrup in a grande. “Even though it has grape, guava, pumpkin, sweet potato, apple, radish, and cherry juice in it, all of the fiber has been pulled out,” he says. “So this truly is a sugar bomb.”

Beth Warren, R.D., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Secrets of a Kosher Girl, agrees. “The high sugar content makes it difficult to rationalize adding this in as a more frequent part of a healthy, balanced diet,” she says.

If you want to try it out, but want to do it in the healthiest way possible, Jessica Cording, M.S., R.D., author of The Little Book of Game-Changers, recommends choosing the smallest size. “I think this one is best enjoyed in moderation,” she says.
