The Argonaut – Makeshift Drink Monday: salted caramel latte - Argonaut

This coffee shop favorite is filled with flavors to help get your coffee fix at home. Made with fresh milk, strong coffee and salted caramel, it’s simple to put together, sweet and only a little salty.

A modern latte is typically a combination of a double shot of espresso mixed with steamed milk. They can be served hot or iced in a variety of flavors and are considered one of the most popular coffees around the globe, according to The Darkest Roast. The drink can be traced back to the 17th century and originates from Italy, though today’s version of the drink is very much American. The word “latte” is a shortened version of the Italian “caffe latte.”

It takes about 5 minutes to make and serves one. It’s also a fraction of the price seen at coffee shops and even lower in calories.

What you’ll need

  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons salted caramel sauce
  • 1 cup strong coffee
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Whipped cream

Begin by combining milk, caramel sauce and a pinch of sea salt in a small saucepan. Heat until it’s warm, stirring well to dissolve caramel sauce. I used Ghiradelli sea salt caramel premium sauce.

Add coffee and the milk mixture in a mug. Use an immersion blender to blend until frothy. If you don’t own an immersion blender, place in a blender and use a low speed to blend until frothy before pouring into the mug.

Top it off with whipped cream and more caramel sauce. My go-to whip is Reddi-wip original.
