HOST: Kristin Wiig
MUSICAL GUEST: Boyz II Men
EPISODE: Saturday Night Live Season 45, Episode 18
DATE: May 9, 2020

BIG PICTURE: The third and final “SNL At Home” of the season was also the season finale, and what would have been the traditional Mother’s Day episode. Overall, the episode was the least funny of the three “At Home” shows, and proof that once the novelty wears off, the format is subject to the same pressures as a traditional episode. A few sketches were funny, several were touching, and many simply missed the mark.

The show also featured special guests, though their impact was diminished compared to the last two episodes. Kristen Wiig served as the host, and Boyz II Men the musical guest. Alec Baldwin showed up in the cold open as the president in an appearance that reinforced how this impression has really run its course. Josh Gad showed up as the voice of Olaf from Frozen, Tina Fey spoke to Michael Che about quarantine and motherhood on Weekend Update, and Martin Short was misused in a sketch about a couple who do all the wrong things in quarantine, in perhaps his least entertaining SNL appearance ever.

MONOLOGUE/HOST: Wiig “hosted,” opening the show with a jazzy dance number enhanced with animation. She did a monologue from her home that found her lounging on a cozy rug, talking about how this would normally be the Mother’s Day episode. She gave it her all, but I found the impact restrained by the format. Her talk about Mother’s Day wasn’t particularly funny, but it tugged a few heart strings. Wiig returned later for an uninspired sketch playing a hair blogger in which her performance outshined the material.

NOTABLE SKETCHES/PERFORMANCES: The cast and various children put on a musical number making the argument that to ease the stress on parents during quarantine, we should “Let Kids Drink.” Among the funnier lines,  “they’ll be happier and funnier, and they’ll fall asleep by 6.” Also, “Babies look drunk anyway, and burp and puke just like I would.” This was fun, though I could see some being upset by the many shots of kids swilling booze or passed out surrounded by liquor bottles. By the end, we’re serenaded by a kids chorus, and Josh Gad, as Olaf, sings, “Disney said it’s fine,” before quickly realizing that might not be true.

Masterclass Quarantine Edition is SNL‘s gift that keeps on giving during the “At Home” episodes, mostly thanks to Chloe Fineman. Here, she gives us an excellent Phoebe Waller-Bridge teaching journaling – she keeps two journals, and the one with her naughty secrets is too sticky to open. She also plays a batty Britney Spears, while Melissa Villasenor captures John Mulaney teaching “suits.” “This suit is ideal if the vibe you’re going for is ‘precocious kid who’s asking all the wrong questions at this funeral.'”

Kenan Thompson delighted as a patient preacher on a Zoom service trying desperately to get his congregation to mute their computers, and as host of “What’s Wrong with this Picture,” a game show where the three Mother’s Day contestants took the most warped possible approaches to the simple, innocent pictures they were shown. Of a cartoon of a woman looking at a mirror, Aidy Bryant said, “The glory hole is too high, now she knows it’s the neighbor.”

In Eleanor’s House, Bryant hosted a Pee Wee Herman-ish live/animation hybrid where she threw a party in her imagination that got out of hand, turning into a dirtbag bash that found a sleazy version of Kyle Mooney getting tasered in a hot tub.

Mikey Day’s son Brandon, basically a featured player at this point, starred in a sketch that found him pulling mean, abusive pranks on his dad, including lining his toilet seat with thumb tacks and changing every contact in his phone to Gigi Hadid. A fun showcase for the father/son team.

Kate McKinnon played a lighthouse keeper who gave tips for living in isolation, including making your groceries last by having them all be beans, and staying on top of the news by listening through a shell.

WEEKEND UPDATE: Michael Che is completely out of fucks to give. While Colin Jost stuck to traditional jokes, Che spent part of the segment drink in hand, expressing what felt like real fears about making it through the summer, including talking about the Georgia murder of Ahmaud Arbery while jogging. “I live in a very, very, very white neighborhood, and I spend so much of my time trying not to look suspicious to white neighbors. It’s exhausting,” he said. “But even I can’t think of something less suspicious in a white neighborhood than jogging. Except maybe tinkering on a Trans Am listening to Whitesnake, or walking a toddler on a leash. What else can we do?”

Che also spoke with Fey, who had a “message for mothers.” Fey is spending more time with her passwords during quarantine, and for some reason is teaching her kids Latin. Fey says the quarantine is teaching her a lot in return. “Did you know that if you’re baking cookies and you don’t have any flour, you can just go to bed?” she said. “You can all just shut your mouths and go to bed.”

Cecily Strong appeared as Jeanine Pirro, who had to do her own makeup “while looking into a spoon,” drank boxed wine out of a box bigger than her head, and somehow wound up in the woods dressed in camouflage and drinking a “Pina Cloroxa,” which is a Pina Coloda with bleach.

THE 10 TO 1 SLOT: SNL reached for the heartstrings in the final sketch of the season as the cast members were shown sleeping, dreaming of crowded New York moments in the city of old. We saw Strong and Mooney in Times Square, Bryant in Central Park surrounded by puppies, Pete Davidson in Yankee Stadium. A few of those were humorously skewed – Thompson found himself in a scene from Tootsie, and Ego Nwodim squirming on a park bench next to a young Woody Allen – but the power of a bustling city was the image that resonated.

Happy summer, everyone.
