GREENWICH — After a year of limited hours, capacity limits, and takeaway orders at restaurants all across the state, drinks are on the house.

The Connecticut Restaurant Association and Gov. Ned Lamont announced in late April its Drinks on Us push. Starting on May 19, diners that have received at least their first COVID vaccine are eligible for a free drink at participating restaurants. And so far, foodies ready to kick back and sip a cold one are eligible to do so at at least three restaurants in town.

Patrons must purchase food in order to participate in the program and are required to show proof of the vaccine to qualify.

“We see it as a good thing. It was pretty difficult to get vaccinated in the early days, but it’s gotten much easier,” Douglas Grabe, co-owner of the Little Pub in Cos Cob, wrote in an email. “Unfortunately, the stories of the early difficulties are still out there, and while I don’t think anyone will decide to get vaccinated based on a free drink, I do think that anything that raises the awareness of how easy it is to get vaccinated is a good thing for those so inclined. For us it’s a public service.

Beppe Cornacchia, the owner of Applausi Osteria in Old Greenwich, also said he was happy to sign on with the program.

“It’s great to get back to normal,” he said. “And we need to make people feel comfortable.”
