The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) and non-profit organization EAT have announced a strategic partnership on an initiative aiming to grow the consumption of sustainable seafood worldwide, the former announced.
EAT's founder and working chairwoman, Gunhild Stordalen, has been appointed by the UN to lead efforts creating demand for healthy and sustainable food worldwide, with the aim of shifting diets towards the more sustainable proportions outlined in the EAT-Lancet report released last year.
Due to its UN mandate, EAT has been teaming up with several strategic partners to collaborate on regional initiatives, with the NSC due to be one such organization.
"When it comes to the ocean, Norway can become a global superpower," Stordalen said. "As a fishing and ocean industries nation we are already a major player, but with the necessary shift in global food systems -- and the vital role sustainable seafood plays in this -- it represents a unique opportunity for Norwegian seafood. In this, the Norwegian Seafood Council has a key role to play."
Currently, food from the oceans only comprises roughly 2% of global calorie intake, and both Stordalen and NSC CEO Renate Larsen believe the oceans are capable of supporting a more significant proportion of global diets.
"We will work towards putting increased consumption of healthy and sustainable seafood on the agenda globally," said Larsen on the new partnership. "If we are to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, we need to eat more food from the oceans -- and that starts with ensuring seafood gets a louder voice both in Norway and internationally."
