ANN ARBOR, MI -- An Ann Arbor carbonated beverage maker claims it can add fizz to any drink -- even wine.
Drinkmate dubs itself as “The Carbonate Anything Drink Maker” and the second-largest home carbonation brand.
CEO Douglas Wang, who has an engineering background, started the brand six years ago after noticing his SodaStream, a popular at-home beverage maker, could only create carbonated flavored water, said Jim McElroy, Drinkmate’s sales and marketing director.
“His teenage daughter asked her dad, ‘Why can’t this machine carbonate lemonade?' That got his engineering mind working on the issue," McElroy said. "The company then developed some technology, which we’ve since patented, that allows us to not only carbonate water but various beverages,”
The patented feature, called the “fizz infuser,” works with air pressure and can add bubbles to anything, including juice, cocktails, iced tea, coffee, wine and even flat beer or pop, McElroy said.
“We have a way so you can slowly or quickly pressurize it, depending on how much (carbon dioxide) you put into the drink,” McElroy said. “That’s the technology that allows us to let you make anything carbonated. That’s what sets us apart from everybody else out there.”
Drinkmate products are selling in more than 30 countries in North and South America, Europe and Asia, McElroy said. He didn’t disclose sales numbers but said the company has grown in the “triple digits” this year and has doubled its distribution facility, citing the coronavirus pandemic as a reason, since more people are at home instead of socializing or drinking at bars, and because more people are living healthier lives.
“As we’ve all become more health conscious of what we put into our bodies, we see sales of soda pop declining," McElroy said. “And sales of healthier carbonated beverages have gone up. That’s kind of the trend we’re following because people want greater control of what they’re putting into their bodies and our machine allows you to have control over that.”
Other than the ability to carbonate liquids, the company aims to reduce waste by allowing consumers to refill CO2 cylinders and eliminate plastic bottle usage, McElroy said.
“Even prior to the pandemic, consumers were asking for ways to increase overall health and reduce bottle waste, and this is the foundation on which the Drinkmate brand is developed," he said. “COVID has only accelerated demand for our products."
Drinkmate has leveraged its technology to develop the first personal carbonating bottle called the stainless steel InstaFizz water bottle, which lets people carbonate beverages while on the go.
"As we increase our R&D, manufacturing, and distribution capabilities throughout the world, we are actively expanding our reach to support future and increasing growth for years to come,” Wang said in a statement.
Drinkmate products are mainly sold online and in stores such as Macy’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, Home Depot and Walmart.
