Critic's log, pandemic date 202009.3.
We are departing the lockdown system and entering the post-quarantine beta sector on a most critical mission seeking quasi-normality. It is a mission of eating and, when necessary, writing about said eating in hopes of sustaining restaurant life as it was once known on this planet. — Jean-Luc Picard Le Boeuf

Trekking through Sanibel, one dish at a time
It had been 20-some years since I vacationed on Sanibel. I've been to the island plenty, mostly to eat. But vacationing on Sanibel is for Michiganders and Wisconsinites, their pale, northern skin branded pink by our sun. Sanibel, in my head, belongs to them. Or it did — until the pandemic struck and vacations worldwide came to a screeching halt. How does a restaurant critic eat through Sanibel with a small, COVID-conscious group amid a pandemic? Carefully. Here's a closer look in The News-Press. Naples Daily News subscribers, your link is here.
Of Legends and Paradise
Two new restaurants in Bonita Springs and North Naples caught my eye recently: Mediterranean Paradise and Legends B&>. The former offers stunning gyros and verdant Greek salads in a simple setting. The latter features Peruvian classics alongside sports bar favorites. I'm giving you a look at both, a two-for-one review deal, if you will. Click here for my take in the NDN. And here for a News-Press link.
Bye bye Big Blue
Big Blue Brewing closed Saturday after four years as a cornerstone of south Cape Coral. This is not the end for the space, or for Big Blue's management. The former bingo hall has a new path. Another brewpub is taking Big Blue's place, with plans to "double down" on Cape Coral. As for its management, they've got some Wicked growth planned. Annabelle Tometich has the details in The News-Press. Click here for a NDN link.
Plant-based and growing
A trio of new plant-based and vegan friendly restaurant concepts have opened in recent weeks, offering everything from "lobster" rolls made with hearts of palm, to coconut-bacon BLTs and gourmet pastries. One's owned by a young couple, another by a cardiologist, the third by a longtime Sanibel chef. Annabelle tells us more in The NP. (here's the NDN link)
But wait there's (a lot) more ...
• A Bonita Springs restaurant earned a 2020 Travelers' Choice award from the folks at Tripadvisor. Sarajane Sullivan tells us who it was and how they did it in COVID times, in #RestaurantNews for the NDN. (click here for a News-Press link)
• Eight new restaurants, offering everything from coffee to club sandwiches to cocktails, have recently opened or are coming soon in Lee County. Annabelle tells us more in The NP. (find a NDN link here)
• Want to get away without going far? Gina Birch continues her Destination Dining series with a meal, or a long weekend, at Pine Island's historic Tarpon Lodge. Find her story in The News-Press. (here's the NDN link)
• Ave Maria has a new fast-casual option; plus sushi-making classes at Roy's, a new culinary director at DeRomo's and more, once again from Sarajane in the NDN. (find the NP link here)
• A reader seeking Asian-inspired noodle soups turned to yours truly. From Laotian coconut soups, to Vietnamese pho and bun bo hue, I had all sorts of ideas. Find them here in The NP. (NDN readers, your link is here)
Full? It happens to the best of us. Bookmark news-press.com/taste and naplesnews.com/entertainment/restaurants for the latest from the SWFL dining scene.
