OSCODA, Mich.– Antlerless deer season begins Saturday, but those hunting near Clark’s Marsh would do best not to eat their kills.

A “Do not eat advisory” issued in October 2018 is still in effect. The advisory applies to deer taken within five miles of Clark’s Marsh. The marsh borders the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base, where a family of chemicals known as P.F.A.s have been seeping into the ground for a long time, and have worked their way into nearby animals.

According to Puneet Vij, a toxicologist for the Michigan Health Department, P.F.A. consumption has serious long–term risks.

“Increased thyroid disease, increase in cancers like kidney and testicular cancer, change in immune response or cholesterol levels. These are some that we know because of the epidemiological studies.”

Make sure to check the D.H.H.S and D.N.R. websites for any important updates regarding hunting season.
