The small "wine windows" can be seen dotted around the Tuscan capital next to the grand entrances of sumptuous noble palaces, where wealthy families used to sell alcohol directly to thirsty customers, passing flasks through to eager hands. Analysis: Parents drink more during pandemics, science confirms
This might not come as a surprise to any parents out there, but science has now definitively shown that parents are more likely to drink during the pandemic.
More specifically, “having at least one child under the age of 18” predicted heavier alcohol use during the pandemic.
It wasn’t the only factor mentioned in a study from Toronto’s York University published two days ago. Having children at home was among depression, social connectedness, income loss and living alone as having an impact on alcohol use.
Most of those things make sense, right? Depression, a sense of isolation, loss of income: These things require coping strategies and, if you don’t have any healthy strategies to lean on, alcohol and drugs might be the answer to which you turn.
But kids? They’re a joy and a delight.
Parents of younger children will get it immediately: “Having children at home has been associated with increased anxiety early in the COVID‐19 pandemic, likely because school and day care closures have placed additional demands on parents,” the study’s authors wrote.
This relationship between parenthood and alcohol use is actually no surprise to anyone (least of all parents). The study’s authors noted that “The finding that living with children under the age of 18 was associated indirectly with alcohol problems via greater coping motives and increased alcohol use is also consistent with prior research showing an association between parenting stress and alcohol consumption.”
What’s new here is that it’s verifiably true — perhaps more so — during the pandemic.
And though we are being a little silly about the subject, it’s not something to laugh about. What’s important here, as the study says, is that “future research on coping during the COVID‐19 pandemic should focus on the unique needs of parents.”
I’ll say it for all the parents out there: Amen.
