Would you eat a Girl Scout Cookie for breakfast? - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – We all know we shouldn’t start our day by eating cookies, but the newest addition to the Girl Scout Cookie line has breakfast written all over it.

Meet the Toast-yay!

The new, toast-shaped cookie is “full of French toast flavor,’' the Girl Scouts recently announced. It features a layer of frosting that tastes like maple syrup and has a crunchy texture. The cookie is even shaped like a piece of toast and has raised, crust-like edges. Each one is stamped with the Girl Scouts’ signature trefoil on top and will be packaged in a bright green box.

The Girls Scouts aren’t pushing the cookies as a breakfast option. But, just how bad would it be to eat a couple for breakfast?

Just for kicks, let’s compare the nutritional value of a serving -- two cookies -- to a couple of sweet, popular breakfast choices, using the fitness and nutrition app MyFitnessPal by Under Armour (UA), and the labels on the product boxes:

  • French toast -- A serving of French toast (three slices) packs about 332 calories, 44 grams of carbohydrates, 14 grams of protein and 11 grams of fat, according to the UA app.
  • Waffles -- Eggo frozen Thick & Fluffy Belgian Style Waffles contain 160 calories for just 1 waffle; 22 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of protein and 7 grams of fat, the box says.
  • Pancakes -- Two fluffy pancakes contain 230 calories, 33 grams of carbohydrates, 6 grams of protein and 8 grams of fat, the UA app says.
  • Two Toast-yay! cookies -- Two cookies contain 140 calories, 21 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein and 6 grams of fat.

So, even if you double the serving and eat four cookies, that’s still fewer calories and carbohydrates and fat than the French toast or two waffles, and just one more gram of fat than the French Toast. Just sayin’.

Two pancakes provide a bit fewer calories and fat, yes. But, who eats two pancakes, really?

Of course, Harvard Medical School says we should eat fruits, nuts and unprocessed grains or low-sugar yogurt for breakfast in the interest of good health, as “to the cells in your body, a bowl of cereal, or a bagel, or a piece of toast, or a muffin are all no different than a dessert.’‘

Processed carbohydrates and sugars cause blood sugar and insulin levels to rise, landing in fat cells as stored energy -- or body fat, and are not the best way to fuel the day’s start.

So, perhaps the Toasty-Yay! should stay in the pantry with other sweet breakfast treats, to be enjoyed sparingly, with a glass of fat-free milk. Will it challenge perennial Girl Scout favorites, like Thin Mints, Samoas and Do-si-Dos in this category? Time will tell.

The Toast-Yay! Is already available in select areas and will be available nationally in January, when the 2021 Girl Scout cookie season officially begins.

Profits from Girl Scout cookie sales fund programs that help girls gain people skills and business smarts. Selling cookies teaches girls how to talk and listen to customers, and how to work as a team, the Girl Scout organization says.

Cookie customers will be able to stay connected with loved ones by using a gift box option that ships directly to others via the Digital Cookie®/Smart Cookie online platforms, and many girls will offer socially-distant or contactless sales and delivery options.

Although the start of cookie season is recognized nationally in January, timing and product availability vary locally. Contact a local council for more information about sale dates and specific cookie availability.
