Birmingham is set to expandEat in the Streets, the outdoor dining initiative created to give patrons the opportunity to enjoy food and drinks outdoors while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This weekend, the program will continue in downtown Birmingham. Starting on Friday, Aug. at 3 p.m., the 100 and 200 blocks of 20th Street North in downtown Birmingham will be closed until Saturday, Aug. 21 at 11 p.m.
Venues participating in this weekend’s event include:
- Trattoria Zaza
- The Yard and Moon Shine from the Elyton Hotel
- Café Dupont
- Chocolatà Artisanal Chocolatier
- Paramount
- Bistro 218
A movie showing and live music will be provided both nights of the event.
“We would like to see 20th Street become a pedestrian mall like downtown areas in other cities,” said Tom Saab, chef and owner of Bistro 218, in a press release. “This is a good start toward that goal.”
Unlike the section of Avondale where Eat in the Streets had its first two runs, this iteration of the program is not in a entertainment district. Patrons may order alcoholic beverages, but will not be permitted to carry open containers between venues.
Besides that change, the structure of the program in downtown Birmingham will remain the same. People may eat at the outdoor tables or order carryout. Jefferson County’s mask ordinance is still in effect, and participants who enter the event corridor must wear masks unless they are eating or drinking. Volunteers will be on-hand to remind patrons to wear their masks. Due to a July 27 order from the Alabama ABC board to limit the sale of alcohol and reduce congregation at public venues in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus restaurants, bars, and clubs in Alabama must stop serving alcohol at 11:00 p.m.
