Huzzah! Here's what to drink at the Texas Renaissance Festival this year - Chron

lemperbon.blogspot.com

With the temperatures finally cooling down and the holidays approaching, it marks the beginning of a beloved tradition: The Texas Renaissance Festival. Now in its 47th year, people from all over come to Todd Mission to eat, drink and be merry in a very different time.

And it's not all about the turkey legs—there's plenty to drink. Sure, you can hit up almost any food vendor for a beer or frozen lemonade. But whether you're a cocktail fan or a seasoned sommelier, there are options to upgrade your festival experience from just walking around with a beer in hand.

Here's what, where and how you should drink at the Texas Renaissance Festival, depending on your preference.

Mead

Drink like those of yore did and grab a glass or bottle of mead for the road. Mead is alcohol traditionally made with honey, yeast and water and was said to cure a number of maladies (or just get all those royals and peasants drunk). Enchanted Manor Meadery has created a traditional-style mead especially for the Texas Renaissance Festival, as well as a few other interesting takes on the beverage. Tea drinkers will enjoy Enchanted Manor's Earl Grey mead, while those looking for something with an intriguing kick should try the Queen Mother's Herbed and Spiced Mead made with ginger, lemon peel, cloves, and osmanthus blossom.

Wine

Haak Winery from nearby Santa Fe, Texas is out at the festival offering daily guided wine tastings at Odin's Table. The curated tasting includes Haak's mead-style white wine, white port, tawny port, Blanc du Bois Madeira and "Renaissance" Madeira. You'll get to take home a wine glass as well. Odin's Table will also be open outside of tasting times for bottle and wine by the glass purchases.

Cocktails

For those looking for something more upscale, Wyrmwood Public House is where to go for craft cocktails in glassware, as well as daily absinthe and tequila tastings. It also has a very different vibe from the rest of the festival. Instead of Renaissance garb, you'll find a steampunk "Victorian fantasyland." Cocktails available include the Death in the Afternoon, made with absinthe, simple syrup, champagne and a lemon twist; the Last Word made with gin and green chartreuse; and classics such as a sazerac, margarita or paloma. If you're looking for an early wake-up call, you'll also find coffee-based cocktails like the Irish Coffee or The Carajillo, or mimosas and the Buck’s Fizz, a blend of gin, champagne, and fresh-squeezed juices. Bonus: It's one of the very few places in the festival with central air conditioning.

21+ only, Booth #225; Reservations required for absinthe and tequila tastings

Beer

It's no secret that there's plenty of beer anywhere you turn at the Renaissance Festival. But if you really want to get a sampling of beer and drunken festival fun, there's a twice-daily pub crawl that makes five stops across the festival's alehouses. The tour promises dirty jokes galore from the three tour guides, as well as five 8-ounce tasting pours and a commemorative glass. This is also a chance to employ your own dirty jokes—the tourist who offers the most inappropriate source of laughter for the group will get a "prize of (dis)honor" at the end as thanks for their contribution.

21+ only, $45
