This month brings Día de los Muertos dinners and Diwali festivities, the return of a fan-favorite foodie extravaganza, and a chef takeover of one of Houston’s longtime neighborhood burger joints. There’s also a chili cook-off, Asian night market, and beer-fueled 5K.

  • Día de los Muertos at Caracol, Hugo’s, Urbe & Xochi | Tuesday, November 2 – The husband-and-wife team of Chef Hugo Ortega and Tracy Vaught present a lineup of Día de los Muertos menus at their restaurants, including Caracol, Hugo’s, Urbe and Xochi. Peruse the menus at each and dine on dishes such as brisket enchiladas in mole negro, slow-roasted pork tamal, head-on shrimp with cremoso de calabaza, pan du muerto, candied pumpkin with caramel sauce and more.
  • Houston Press Menu of Menus at Silver Street Studios | Tuesday, November 2 The 19th Annual Houston Press Menu of Menus Extravaganza features unlimited sampling from a mashup of the city’s favorites restaurants, with this year’s lineup including top spots like Click Virtual Food Hall, FM Kitchen & Bar, Kuu, Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House, Shun Japanese Kitchen and more. Tickets are $49 for general admission with unlimited food samples and drinks; $79 for VIP with one-hour early entry and complimentary valet parking before 6:30pm. 7pm to 10pm (6pm VIP).
  • Diwali Festivities at Pondicheri | Wednesday, November 3 to Sunday, November 7 Pondicheri will be celebrating the ancient Indian holiday of Diwali, offering a luxurious Araam Thali special from November 3 to November 7 at the restaurant. The Thali (think sampler platter) will feature Vegetable Market Curry, Herb Pooris, Sindhi Dal, okra, and a sweet rose laddu. Guests can add a side of lamb keema or butter chicken for an additional charge. There will also be a Malai Cheesecake on offer for dessert; and a Diwali Sweet Box containing classic Indian treats like Besan Mithai, Chocolate Peanut Mithai, Sindhi Laddu, and more available for purchase upstairs at the Pondicheri Bake Lab + Shop and online. 9am to 9pm daily; Friday and Saturday 9am to 10pm.
  • The Classics Remix: Aaron Bludorn x Lankford Grocery | Friday, November 5 to Sunday, November, 7 – As Resy pays tribute to the restaurants that define our cities in its nationwide The Classics series, Chef Aaron Bludorn will be taking over the kitchen at Houston institution Lankford Grocery for one weekend only. Available by reservation, the dine-in and takeout menu features the Bludorn Short Rib Burger, Moroccan Spiced Curly Fries, Thyme and Fig Jam Cheesecake and a choice of drink for $34.95 per person, plus tax and fees. Reservations required to order this item. Times vary.
  • Fiery Laksa Challenge for Charity at Phat Eatery | Saturday, November 6 – Phat Eatery will be hosting another Hot & Spicy Challenge, inviting daring participants to consume an entire spicy level 8 version of its house favorite, Laksa noodle soup, in 30 minutes (without a sip of water or milk for five minutes following the final bite). Entry is $25 (fees benefit The Ballard House) and contestants will compete for a $50 gift card, swag and housemade ice cream. Phat Eatery will also donate an additional $100 for each person who completes the challenge. Registration is open through November 5, or until available slots are filled. 11am to 10pm.
  • Maestro Dobel Tequila & Wine Dinner at Alicia’s Mexican Grille Spring | Saturday, November 6 – Guests are invited to enjoy three courses paired with Maestro Dobel premium tequilas and wine at this fall feast. Highlights include chile en nogada, fajita skirt steak and jumbo shrimp surf ‘n’ turf, and pumpkin flan. Cost is $79 per person (plus tax and gratuity). Reservations are required. 7pm.
  • Art Car IPA 5k at Saint Arnold Brewery | Sunday, November 7 Each year, Saint A brings together its love for beer and running with its Art Car IPA 5K, which starts at the brewery and makes its way through East Downtown before ending at the brewery for some celebratory drinks. Registration is $55 and includes entry into the 5K and post race party, a commemorative Art Car IPA 5K pint glass, a technical race shirt, three tasty beers, chip timing, commemorative race bib, and an official Art Car IPA 5K 2021 finisher medal. Those who want to simply cheer on can register for $25 for beer and party passes. 8:30am.
  • El Luchador at Tacodeli | Ends Wednesday, November 10 – Tacodeli’s latest limited-time taco special is an ode to traditional Mexican street tacos. Available for lunch and dinner, El Luchador ($4.50) features lean grilled beef, chile de arbol salsa, avocado, cilantro, onion, served with a lime wedge on the side, inspired by Tacodeli co-founder Roberto Espinosa’s nostalgia for his childhood hometown, Mexico City. 
  • Night Market 2021 at Asia Society Texas | Friday, November 12 | FREE – This festive night market will feature 40+ local AAPI-owned restaurants and small businesses, celebrating the vibrant diversity of Houston’s Asian American communities. Expect games and activities for all ages, K-Pop performances, free after-hours exhibitions, and a variety of food trucks and local artisan vendors. This year’s event will also launch ASTX’s Unity Wall, an interactive installation that invites guests to write down what they can do to build a more inclusive society. Free to attend; wristbands for the beer garden are $20. 6pm to 10pm. 
  • Cook the Harvest at Hope Farms: Pastry Techniques for Entertaining | Saturday, November 13 –  Head to the beautiful Hope Farms for a special cooking class with Chef Carlos Meltzer, featuring pastry techniques for the upcoming holidays. Participants will learn the basics behind making pastry dough, rolling out an even crust and blind baking to serve up pies and quiches, and discover the pastry batter behind clafoutis, a great way to showcase any seasonal produce. Sign up for $79 per seat. 12:30pm.
  • Chili Cook-Off at Revelry on Richmond | Sunday, November 14 – Chili enthusiasts won’t want to miss Revelry’s 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off, where competitors will face off for cash, prizes and the opportunity to be crowned the Chili Cook-Off Champ. For $5, tasters can get a wristband and a ballot to cast their vote for the best. 1pm.
  • The Oxtail Mashup at Project Row Houses | Sunday, November 14 – This spirited competition of both food and drink celebrates art along with the culinary diversity of oxtail and the playfulness of tiki in the lush garden of Project Row Houses. This year, hometown chefs from Indigo’s Jonny Rhodes to Squable’s Mark Clayton will go head-to-head with top names from Philadelphia, Atlanta, San Antonio, and more; and there will be a new island punch component with bartenders competing to make the best tiki punch. A percentage of proceeds raised throughout the evening will benefit Project Row Houses and Texas’ Children’s Sickle Cell Anemia programs throughout Houston. Tickets are $75 for general admission and $135 for VIP. 7pm to 10pm.
