Where to stay
With 55 rooms and suites, an outdoor pool, and an award-winning wine list at the onsite bistro, the family- and pet-friendly PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn reopens this month. It’s steps from Squaw Valley’s world-renowned skiing, while Tahoe City shops and the lake are eight miles away.
Where to find adventure
In 1960, Olympic cross-country and biathlon athletes competed for gold in the area that is now Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point Park. These days, the miles of marked paths, including the General Creek Trail, retraces segments of the former Olympic courses.
A popular hiking spot, Shirley Canyon transforms into a winter wonderland come December, and the four-hour guided snowshoe tour with Alpenglow Expeditions is the best way to take in views of icy waterfalls and creeks.
Where to eat
Just 100 feet above the shoreline, Christy Hill is both romantic and scenic, especially from the outdoor deck, now equipped with heat lamps and fire pits for lakeside meals of pan roasted scallops, mushroom ravioli, and other contemporary American fare.
A breakfast tradition since 1978, Fire Sign Cafe, just a few miles from small but scenic Homewood Ski Resort, dishes out four kinds of eggs Benedict, massive omelettes, and French toast made with sliced challah bread from Truckee Sourdough Company, ensuring you’re fueled for a day outdoors. (Reopens December 16.)
Where to shop
The Bavarian-inspired Cobblestone Center houses independently owned businesses such as Tipsy Gipsy for casual women’s clothing, Pineapple for home decor, and Tahoe Trunk Show for a rotation of art, jewelry, and woodwork. Uncorked wine bar offers to-go bottles of limited production wines from appellations around the globe.
Northstar, Truckee, and Donner Lake
Stay here if: You want a petit version of the Sierra scenery of nearby Lake Tahoe, and for access to a bustling Main Street–meets–mountain town that’s only 10 minutes from the coveted slopes of Northstar.
Where to stay
The Ritz Carlton’s easy ski-in, ski-out access makes it ideal for those who want to hit the Northstar slopes fast. The hotel’s posh aprés-ski scene pairs Moët & Chandon champagne with music and a raw bar of chilled shrimp cocktail, crab, and caviar by outdoor firepits.
Where to ski
If flat terrain is more your speed, set out on the 60-plus miles of cross country trails at Tahoe Donner Cross Country Center, which meander through meadows, forests and along creeks. New to the sport? The center is offering private lessons this season.
