John Cena ate 31 empanadas in a row for a scene in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Gunn is making the jump from the Marvel universe to the DC side of things with The Suicide Squad, the second film centered on the titular team of morally gray anti-heroes. Not quite a sequel and not quite a reboot, The Suicide Squad will see a new Task Force X embark on a mission to retrieve something from a Nazi-era laboratory before destroying it. Little else is known about the film's plot, but it's certain that there will be quite the body count, especially as various team members kill each other off.
Going into The Suicide Squad, audiences are already pretty knowledgeable about characters like Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), but there will be plenty of characters they don't yet know who will be around to entertain them. This includes John Cena's Peacemaker, a man who wants peace so much he'll kill to get it. Cena described Peacemaker as a "douchey Captain America" back in August, and fans are undoubtedly eager to learn more about him.
Cena joined Gunn and some of his fellow The Suicide Squad stars during WarnerMedia's CCXP panel on Sunday, and though he didn't reveal too much about Peacemaker, he did share a rather difficult scene for the character. Cena recalled how one moment required him to eat an empanada, and he committed to downing the entire thing in one take. The problem? It was a tricky shot that required several takes. Cena and Gunn both recalled the incident:
John Cena: “There was a day where we shot on a roof top, where we’re all eating. I had to eat an empanada, and I took it upon myself to try to eat the entire empanada in a seamless take thinking that it’ll look great. But it was also a complicated shot for James. 31 empanadas later we got it right.”
James Gunn: “Did you throw up that night?”
John Cena: “I think 32 would have been the heave ho, but I was able to like penguin waddle out of there and just relax and unbutton, but people are going to see the movie and nobody’s gonna care so please, remember the empanadas.”
Cena then went on to say he wants audiences to appreciate what he went through when they watch The Suicide Squad. When it comes to eating during a movie scene, many actors have lamented the amount of food they were forced to ingest at one time, but Cena's struggle is especially rough (and humorous). That Suicide Squad scene will now take on a new meaning with viewers. And luckily, Cena's sacrifice wasn't in vain, as he's getting his own HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker soon enough.
The Suicide Squad promises to have many surprises in store, and fans will be able to see it both in theaters and on streaming next August. That's right: The Suicide Squad is one of Warner Bros.' 2021 movies that will debut both in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. This means The Suicide Squad will keep its distinction of being the only upcoming DCEU film to avoid a COVID-related delay. That's a pretty impressive feat, and one that Cena, after his empanada debacle, will likely appreciate.
