Fitness queen Kayla Itsines has revealed what really happens to your body when you start your mornings with a cup of coffee.

The 29-year-old, from Adelaide, said while she drinks coffee every morning, she only has it once she's eaten breakfast.

'I know so many people who wake up and have a coffee straight away, before they have allowed their body to wake up naturally and before they have eaten anything. I would not recommend doing this,' the personal trainer wrote on Instagram.

'If you drink coffee first thing in the morning, yes it will give you a big spike of energy but it will also suppress your appetite, so you might not eat anything while you're having the coffee - or even afterwards.

'What happens then is that the coffee wears off, and your energy levels will crash because you haven't eaten anything (your body has no fuel).'

The CEO of the Sweat empire explained how coffee is an appetite suppressant so it can reduce feelings of hunger.

'So if you have a coffee before breakfast it can make it hard to tell how hungry you are and you might not eat enough. Then you will lack energy for the rest of the day,' she said.

If you drink start your mornings with coffee, Kayla said you'll likely reach for another cup of caffeine or have a sugary craving.

'Then the unhealthy cycle continues,' she explained.

Kayla warned you should never 'rely on coffee to wake you up'.

'I recommend waking up and eating a healthy and nutritious breakfast that fills you up, then have a coffee afterwards if you feel like it,' she said.

'If you feel like you really need a coffee first thing in the morning, make sure you eat something at the same time, even if it's something small - like a piece of toast or yoghurt and muesli.'

Her advice comes just weeks after she revealed her typical daily diet that keeps her lean all year round.

Kayla said she mainly follows a Mediterranean-style diet that is packed full of Greek foods from her heritage.

'This means a wide variety of vegetable and fruit as snacks, and a good mix of vegetables, protein and carbohydrates in my meals,' she wrote on her website.

Kayla said she also eats more than you might expect, because she is eating to 'fuel' her body for a day of workouts and training clients.

'Breakfast isn't the most important meal of the day - all meals are important to live a healthy balanced lifestyle,' she said.

She never skips breakfast because she knows it's 'going to kickstart my day'.

'It doesn't mean spending hours creating a fancy, gourmet dish - it means taking time to consider what I put on my plate and how it can benefit me,' she said.

'I am really active throughout my day, so breakfast helps me to fuel a busy schedule. I need a wholesome meal that provides me with good nutrition and energy.'
