With the Denver Broncos on a three-game losing skid, many an orange clad fan is drowning their sorrows, according to recent survey of NFL die-hards.
American Addiction Centers (alcohol.org) surveyed 3,719 pro football fans online, asking whether they drink or more less if their favorite team lost on game day.
Broncos fans responded that they drink “more,” and most said that their drink of choice is “local craft beer.”
Overall, local craft beer was the most preferred game day beverage among NFL fans with 28.9% drinking regional suds while watching the game. More than one-third, 34.8% of Broncos fans polled in the survey said they drink local craft beer. Only 1.2% of Broncos fans drink wine while viewing and 7.9% don’t consume alcohol, according to the survey.
“Some fans, like those who support the Broncos, tend to drown their sorrows and drink more when their team loses,” said PR Fire in a news release. “On the other hand, fans of teams such as the 49ers drink in equal amounts whether their team wins or loses. Fans of the Seattle Seahawks tend to drink least when their team loses, perhaps preferring to go home early instead.”
Sports aside, it’s imperative that anyone drinking outside their home get home safely without putting themselves or other in danger — don’t drink and drive, according to alcohol.org.
“According to our survey, 1 in 4 NFL fans will drive themselves home from a night of drinking,” alcohol.org said. “The remainder use either a ride share, a ride from a friend, public transportation, or simply walk/bike.”
Fans who drink should not drive, “even if you feel fine,” the survey authors said. Alcohol.org provides resources to help people who are battling alcohol addiction.
PR Fire recommends alcohol-free beers and cocktails for fans who so desire. Fans who want to say “no” to alcohol on game day are encouraged to do so “without fear.”
