When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day beverages, you have two main choices: something green or something Irish. Both are good options, and not as limiting as they might initially appear. Guzzling tepid green beer all night is fine if you’re young and able to bounce back from a hangover within 24 hours, but most people over 30 have to be a little choosier with their beverages. And, though it does seem we are approaching the end of this particular health crisis, this is not the night to be drinking inside bars, even if they are technically open. Luckily, I have many St. Patrick’s Day beverage suggestions, all of which or either green or made with Irish whiskey.
Something green
Matching your adult beverage to your shamrock-emblazoned t-shirt is a favorite St. Patrick’s Day tradition, but that doesn’t mean you have to guzzle glass after glass of green food coloring. Fresh and bright basil can be muddled to make an uplifting lemonade, Green Chartreuse sings with either spicy ginger beer or tropical pineapple, and both add a sophisticated, verdant hue by way of plants. If you feel like consuming a little food coloring (but not beer), you can always make a Dewgarita (for energy) or a Grasshopper (for dessert).
Something Irish
Irish whiskey is the other primary go-to for this particular holiday, and that’s great news because Irish whiskey is very fun to drink. It happens to be featured in two of my favorite three-ingredient cocktails—Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s Irish Goodbye (which contains woodsy Cynar and Lillet Blanc), and a classic—as in “from the 1930s”—stiff cocktail called the “Brainstorm.” You can also use Irish whiskey to make Irish cream, which is very easy and very delicious, and tastes fantastic with a little fernet.
Something with coffee
Then there is the Irish coffee which, as the name would suggest, is made with Irish whiskey and coffee. A properly made, hot Irish coffee is crafted with care and attention, which makes it a beverage that’s best suited for the beginning of your evening, before things get sloppy. If you want something a little more streamlined—or just don’t feel like drinking hot alcohol—you can make a shaken, chilled version cold brew concentrate and sweetened condensed milk. (Both are good, and I love having options.)
