CLEVELAND, Ohio – A survey ranks Cleveland baseball fans fourth in how much they drink at the ballpark during games.
Njonlinegambling.com conducted the survey this year of 2,631 Major League Baseball fans over age 21 (respondents’ average age was 36). Fans were asked how many alcoholic beverages they typically consume while watching a baseball game as well as about how much they spend.
When it comes to imbibing, fans in only three cities were ahead of Tribe rooters: Chicago White Sox fans top the list at 4.2 drinks per game while dropping $46. Atlanta Braves backers quaff four drinks a game and spend $32. And Reds fans in Cincinnati down 3.8 drinks and spend $40.
Philadelphia Phillies fans, at 2.4 drinks per fan, were the closest thing to teetotalers.
When it comes to pregaming, 58% of Cleveland fans reported they like to drink before a game, ranking them 12th. And 43% of Cleveland fans said they had missed some or all of a game due to drinking too much, putting them in fourth on the list of “lightweight” drinkers.
Of course, drinking at baseball games harkens one of the more ignoble moments in Cleveland’s sports history. On June 4, 1974, the Indians forfeited a game to the Texas Rangers after the crowd became unruly on 10 Cent Beer Night. Alcohol-inning cutoffs, among other regulations, have put the kibosh on any reoccurrence of that.
