MAYVILLE, N.Y. (WKBW) — Mayville residents are being told not to drink their tap water after a potentially harmful chemical was found in the public water system's wells.
The Chautauqua County and New York State health departments issued the "do not drink" water advisory Thursday. Health officials say they found Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA). The chemical is suspected to cause reproductive and liver problems when ingested in large amounts.
County health leaders say the levels of PFNA in the water ranged from 75 to 330 parts per trillion (ppt), so they are advising residents not to use their tap water for cooking, drinking, teeth brushing, or for letting pets drink it. It is still safe to use for washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, and bathing.
They're holding a virtual town hall Friday to discuss the findings. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. on the health department's Facebook page.
Until the advisory is lifted, health leaders are asking residents use bottled water for consumption. The health department is distributing bottled and canned water at the Town of Chautauqua DPW Garage at 50 Patterson Street in Mayville. Residents can pick up water at the following times:
- Friday, December 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
- Saturday, December 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
