While many New Englanders pride themselves on drinking Dunkin’ iced coffee throughout the year, there’s something special about bundling up with a warm mug during the holiday season. From peppermint mocha lattes to mulled wine, everyone has a favorite seasonal beverage.
Here in Massachusetts, the most popular holiday drink is hot chocolate, according to research by ceramics brand Denby. The study, which used search data from Google Trends, sought to learn the most popular holiday drink in each state.
The next most popular beverages in the Bay State are eggnog, holiday punch and peppermint mochas.
Massachusetts is not alone in their number one selection, as hot cocoa was the most common favorite drink in the country, coming in first place in 17 states including New York, California, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Rhode Island.
The peppermint mocha was also widely popular nationally, named the top drink in 13 states including New Hampshire, Michigan and Nevada. This drink is usually made from espresso, steamed milk, peppermint syrup, and mocha sauce and was made very popular by Starbucks when it was added to its holiday menu.
Eggnog was another common choice, of course, being a beverage most people only drink during the holidays. The drink, made from chilled eggs, milk, cream, sugar and spices, was the most popular in eight states including Connecticut, Vermont, Florida and Hawaii.
The remaining New England state, Maine, was the only state in America whose most popular drink was mulled cider.
